Computers can be absolutely awesome when they work right because what you can do with them is virtually limitless! You can play all kinds of games on them from doing crossword puzzles to chess to checkers and backgammon to the latest and greatest video games, and even video games from decades ago. You can research anything on them using the power of the Internet and the search engines. You can contact anyone in the entire world on them, just like when us old folks used to do pen pals before computers! You can even contact the President of the United States!
You can create and edit pictures, music and videos or you can learn how to create your own computer programs! You can learn a foreign language or translate foreign language pages into your native language!
When Things Go Wrong
However, computers can also be the bane of your existence when they stop working right, or when something REALLY bad happens like the hard drive fails and your data is gone forever. Something that you will always want to remember though is that computers can be replaced. The hardware can be replaced. The software can be reinstalled or re-purchased and reinstalled (not ideal, but it is possible). But – your precious data cannot be replaced if that drive fails or something else happens (like a virus). Always, always back up your data, and back it up to multiple places. Backup devices can fail too, and you would be amazed at how many times I have gone on a service call with a failed hard drive, the user thought everything was backed up, and their backup device had failed too!
Computers can be very frustrating to use when they run slowly, especially for no apparent reason. There are, however, many possible reasons that a computer can run very slowly, including viruses or malware, corruption in the operating system (Windows or Mac OS as examples), a non-malware program gone rogue (corrupt), memory or other resource exhaustion, or a hard drive that is about to fail.
Here are a few tips to remember when things go wrong:
- VERIFY your data is really backed up somewhere!
- Don’t wait to call for help – call when you start to get symptoms! The repair could be less expensive if things haven’t completely gotten out of hand yet, PLUS when you let it go and then it becomes an emergency, it makes it MORE difficult for YOU and your technician!
- Don’t self-diagnose unless you know what you are talking about. When you call a technician, just tell them what is going on – they will figure out what caused it. That is their job 🙂
